The folks at Giant Step are starting the new year with a pleasant change. Moving their weekly gig from Monday to Thursday, they relaunch their party as the new and improved Giant Step Records showcase. Don’t worry, the ever dependable jock Ron Trent is still serving as the resident DJ, anchoring the night with his tried-and-true deep house beats. This week’s special guest is the U.K.’s Phil Asher. Asher’s been knocking around the London house scene for a good 10 years, bringing his jazz-influenced house music to clubs around Europe and recording for labels like Talking Loud and under various guises (with Restless Soul, Phlash, and Woolph). The only bad thing about this move is that you’ll have to find something new to do on Monday nights. Thursdays @ 10, Shine, 285 W Broadway and Canal, 941-0900.
Technophiles will delight in the return of Sonic Groove‘s Frankie Bones, Adam X, and Heather Heart to Tronic Treatment. The threesome are a few of New York’s unsung heroes—one must never forget Mr. Bones’s large contributions to the city’s early warehouse parties. Come pay your respects. Monday @ 10, Guernica, 25 Ave B, 674-0984.
The big-haired, blond one Josh Wink revisits New York’s biggest superclub for the start of his label Ovum Recordings’ new residency. Wink, whose most recent claim to fame is his chart-topping remix of “French Kiss” (called “How’s Your Evening So Far?”), brings along Los Angeles house DJ David Alvarado for the ride. Friday @ 11, Twilo, 530 W 27th, 268-1600.
The Plant folks keep the stellar talent flowing in at an unbelievable pace. Last week’s guest, Junior Sanchez, steps aside for Les Rhythmes Digitales‘ Jacques Lu Cont of Astralwerks and Wall of Sound fame. Mr. Lu Cont’s ’80s, new wave stylings aren’t as fake as his pseudo-French moniker (real name: the less glamorous Stuart Price), but we’ll forgive him if he makes us do the safety dance. Saturday @ 10, Centro-fly, 45 W 21st, 802-7859.
