City mayoral primaries were canceled today due to the terrorist attack that destroyed the World Trade Center. Governor Pataki issued the order calling off all primary elections statewide around noon. Earlier, a judge overseeing New York City elections had moved to cancel them.
There has been no immediate word on when the Democratic and Republican primaries will be rescheduled. Polls had been open for nearly three hours this morning at the time of the first attack, which occurred just before 9 a.m. The decision to call off an election in progress is apparently unprecedented. There is no word yet on what will happen to the ballots already cast.
