Last year at the Sonar festival in Barcelona, one of the standout performances came from Keith Tenniswood, playing under his Radioactive Man moniker. He jumped from one end of a very long table filled with a bazillion pieces of mysterious equipment to the other end, constantly fiddling, tweaking, and changing the sounds coming out of them. He worked up quite a sweat with his dirty, gnarly electro (and none of that nostalgic ’80s stuff, either), and lathered up the crowd too. His 2 Lone Swordsmen compatriot, Andrew Weatherall—who’ll be spinning hard-edged techno and electro—joins him at Bot. Also on this very delish bill (put together by the Static crew) is Bolz Bolz, Mark Broom, M_nus Record’s Clark Warner, and Felix Da Housecat’s wonder boy, Tommie Sunshine. The best chill-out in the world comes courtesy of Mixmaster Morris (who will also be spinning at the Soho Grand on Wednesday at 8, 310 W Bway, 519-6500). Friday at 10, Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 W 34th, 279-7740.
At this year’s WMC, one of the absolute best gigs I saw had both Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak tearing it up. You can’t get both of them on the same night this weekend, but the Chicago jump’n’funk house dons will be dominating C-Fly, with DJ Sneak headlining GBH on Friday (sharing the stage with DJ Disciple) and Derrick Carter (alongside Luke Solomon) spinning at Plant on Saturday. Friday and Saturday at 10, Centro-Fly, 45 W 21st, 627-7770.
Those naughty peeps at Flyer magazine are celebrating their fourth year making the city’s quintessential club guide, picking the posh spot Spa (so very chichi of them!) for the site of the party. Erol Alkan of the popular London club Trash plays in the main room, with some hip-hop/turntablist action courtesy of R2DJ (Def Jux/Ohio), Roli Rho (5th Platoon), and Angola (Antibalas) in the back room. Wednesday at 10, Spa, 76 E 13th, 388-1060.
