Although I know that many events can’t happen without big-money sponsorship, I refuse to print the name of the alcohol company putting on this massive event that we’ll just call The Experience. There are headliners of every flavor on the bill, from Grandmaster Flash (his new mix CD is pure, unadulterated old-skool fun) to Gilles Peterson and Detroit techno jock Derrick May. Plus: Tronic Treatment’s Christian Smith, Satoshi Tomiie (who’s got a Nu Breed mix out), Dave Ralph, the Touch Bros., John Kelly, and my fave, Tom Middleton of the Jedi Knights and Global Communications. His mixing is as creative and organic as his production work, with songs that take unexpected turns from tech house to electro. Thursday @ 9, Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W 18th, 1-800-221-5523.
If you’re not the type to get seasick, boat parties are fantastic fun, something that Jeannie Hopper and her posse have known for years. They host their first Summer Solstice Boat Cruise with Ms. Hopper herself on the decks. Joining her is Tedd Patterson of Vibal Recordings and Keith Thompson performing live. Hopper is also the longtime host of the Liquid Sound Lounge radio show on WBAI (7 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays), which recently got a half-hour lopped off, much to the chagrin of listeners, who lit up the switchboard after the announcement last week. Friday @ 10, Marco Polo Half Moon Boat, at Pier 63, www.liquidsoundlounge.com, 631-3617.
