While summer doesn’t end for a few weeks, Labor Day is the last weekend when it’s still hot enough to hang out on the beach and party all weekend. There are plenty of choices to get your summer groove on, starting with a minimal techno jam starring Stewart Walker (of Force Inc., Persona Records), Gregory Shiff (of Asphodel and Traum), and Broker/Dealer (of Persona Records and Matter/:form)—who are all performing live. Since the show is called No Fucking Laptops, I would surmise there won’t be any laptops. Also not playing on laptops, but DJ’ing on turntables, are local DJs Plexus and Smartypants. Friday @10, Filter 14, 432 W 14th, 212.366.5680.
Househeads can go to Charles Jackson’s (Urban) Beach Party, which rounds up New York legends like Body & Soul‘s Danny Krivit, Andre Collins (of the Warehouse), and David Depino (of the Paradise Garage) under one roof. Deep house love! Sunday @ 11, Roxy, 51 W 18th, 718.992.8967, clubwarehouse.com.
And another Motherfucker bash is already upon us. Justine D and Michael T lead the crowd to join in the chant. Meanwhile headliners the Ssion—truly one of the strangest, yet endearing, acts to come around in a while—will shout-sing their way through a punk-pop set while wearing chicken costumes. I’m not kidding. The last alcoholics standing can stick around for a late-night screening of Party Monster. Sunday @ 10, Downtime, 251 W 30th, 212.695.2747.
What’s a three-day weekend without a monster blowout from the likes of Danny Tenaglia? Saeed and Palash join Mr. Tenaglia (I just switched this around), and if the flyer is any indication, they will be dressed quite creatively. (That’s Danny on the left with the long hair.) Sunday @ 12, Arc, 6 Hubert, 212.981.8703.
I’ll be taking the month off. Keisha Franklin is graciously filling in. Please e-mail her your listings (and be nice!)
