America the imperialist bully? France the nation of cowards? The invasion of Iraq has threatened not only liberté and égalité but also the fraternité long shared by France and the United States. That topic will keep moderator Charlie Rose busy this Friday afternoon at this NYU roundtable discussion. The all-star cast includes journalists Sylvie Kauffmann of Le Monde, Christopher Caldwell of The Weekly Standard, and political scientist Ezra Suleiman, an Iraqi-born Princeton scholar. But no one has stirred the pot recently like participant Tony Judt. In recent weeks, this ex-Oxford history don, currently at NYU’s Remarque Institute, angered many fellow Jews by warning in The New York Review of Books that Israel risks becoming just another ethnic-cleansing, “belligerently intolerant, faith-driven ethno-state.” Then, in Newsweek, he declared that, “in the eyes of the world it is America, not France, that looks foolish.” That will bring fireworks from the likes of Caldwell. The discussion is free and open to the public.
