New York

And so it begins

The tax-cops are bringing in the NAACP for questioning. The IRS is accusing the venerable civil rights group of–gasp!–criticizing President Bush, and thereby violating its tax-exempt status.

NAACP chief Julian Bond has swung low a few times while inveighing against Bush–he once accused him of catering to the “Taliban wing” of the Republican Party. Actually, given recent evidence, that one landed right on the button.

Either way, the timing of the investigation seems curious. Never thought I’d be paraphrasing Clarence Thomas, but it strikes us as high-tech voter intimidation. Man, makes you hanker for the days of red-shirts, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses. OK, so maybe not.
