The CRUCIAL GET DOWN & ENABLER crew didn’t let the fact that they were totally busted last month at their old loft space get them down. They’ve picked themselves up and relocated, with A Guy Called Gerald headlining their comeback affair. Once a temporary Brooklynite (now living overseas again), Manchester’s Gerald (a/k/a Gerald Simpson) is one of the most influential producers of this electronic-music stuff, so we listen up when he’s about to release something new, like his latest record, To All Things What They Need. The producer doesn’t confine himself to one specific subgenre—or even sub-sub-genre—and has dabbled with drum’n’bass, techno, and ambient, often shifting sounds in the space of a song. Michael Mayer, one-half of the frequently paired up Kompakt duo that also includes Reinhart Voigt, is touring behind his latest CD, the somewhat disappointing Touch. The German techno artist, like some of his compatriots, is starting to veer into clunky, hyper-trancey territory, perhaps forgetting that restraint is what nabbed them so much attention in the first place. Jake Fairley’s got the best-named record, maybe ever, Touch Not the Cat, which like some other techno records coming out signals a shift from the sometimes dainty micro house and minimal techno toward stuff with a rougher edge and a little more acieeed in its blood. You can essentially blame the Thievery Corporation for repopularizing lounge culture and making the kind of electronic music that seems tailor-made for car commercials and fancy boutiques. Their selections, usually more mellow, moody, and quaint, seem a strange fit with the large Hiro Ballroom (I personally would rather hear them play lounge music, well, in a lounge), but since it’s been such a long time, I’ll take what I can get.
