Deadly blasts rock London subways; hundreds hurt

Down the tubes

A series of explosions believed to be unprecedented in scope ravaged London’s subway today, and BBC reports that Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility.

At least two people were killed, but hundreds were injured, some critically. Naturally, there’s chaos in London, where this was judged the worst ever subway attack and a far cry from the old IRA “noise bombs.” Severe lockdowns no doubt will occur in transit systems in New York and elsewhere.

G-8 leaders meeting in Edinburgh stood behind a shaken Tony Blair as he vowed to fight the terrorists.

The attack on London didn’t do any favors to the thousands of anti-poverty protesters in Scotland, who no doubt will have to tone it down after ripping through barriers the night before and skirmishing with police.
