Layo & Bushwacka Rise Again


When tech house was tops, Layo & Bushwacka were the kings. But since everything’s gone minimal, their funky, lush, layered productions have been pushed aside for records with more angular sounds. The Brit duo, famous for its parties at the End club in London, has resurfaced with a new label, Olmeto, and a new record, Feels Closer, recorded during a stay in Brooklyn. I always complain that in dance music no one ever seems to graduate or get promoted, which means that the ability for new DJs and producers to break in the upper ranks is incredibly hard. Kaskade is one of the few who’ve pushed past the Sashas and the Derricks to get on the A-list. He makes big-room tunes—sometimes they are jacked-up, stompy bits; sometimes he’s a smoother operator.
