Last Friday, Curbed reported that the beloved Hester Street Kosher bakery, Gertel’s, was closing to make way for yet another condo. Devastated, I called for more info – like, how much time do I have to hoard rugalach and macaroons? But the man who answered the phone was cagey about the whole thing. When I asked if it was true they were closing he said something like “someday we will, who knows.” Until we know for sure, my advice to anyone who knows how to live is to get to Hester Street ASAP, in case it’s about to disappear.
