Like The Voysey Inheritance, just finishing up at the Atlantic, The Madras House seems from the unjustly neglected pen of Harley Granville Barker, a consummate man of the theater. The play ostensibly concerns the fortunes of a London fashion house and its directors, but really centers on still nagging questions of desire and utility.
Though a recent grant should ameliorate matters somewhat, the Mint Theater doesn’t boast too grand a budget. But they managed some small wonders in their current production, including the fashion show that graces the justly celebrated third act. As lovely and provocative in its way as anything at Bryant Park. We liked the “Numero Cinq” particularly.
