In the ’90s, the Lower East Side was dotted with all manner of theater and performance venues–Surf Reality, Collective Unconscious, the Todo con Nada empire. Those spaces have succumbed to the LES development craze, replaced with cafes, bars, and some awfully cute dress shops.
But paradigmatic political theater The Living Theatre has just announced a 10-year lease on a new 100-seat theater on Clinton St. They’ll be inaugurating the space with a revival of The Brig, Kenneth Brown’s play about the dehumanizing influence of a military prison, which one an OBIE during its original 1963 run. Perofrmances begin March 15.
