The trendiness of mango chutney has bewildered and slightly irritated us–we’re not sure why. Maybe it’s because it has become code for “sophisticated,” like balsamic vinegar and sesame-crusted. Or maybe it’s just our own lack of appreciation for sweet condiments.
But that’s all changed with the help of one of our favorite stores in New York, Foods of India on Lexington Avenue. The store-made brand, made from mangoes, sugar, vinegar, salt, and spices, is sweet, but more bright and tangy than sugary, and we’re addicted. This stuff transforms a bowl of rice and lentils into a complex, delicious meal.
