Following in the footsteps of Indian Alphonso mangoes, mangosteens have just become legal to import to the US from Puerto Rico. In the next few weeks, the fruit will be in season and for sale in New York, but at jaw-dropping prices ($10 each). Still, chowhounds are excited, and already speculating on whether the Southeast Asian fruit will become a trendy ingredient for chefs.
