Although Hollywood has only recently begun snagging Korean blockbusters and reshooting them, Korean directors have had a solid history of making excellent pictures. The Film Society at Walter Reade celebrates one of these cinematic key players in Infernal Machines: The Films of Kim Ki-young. Variously hailed as a B-movie genius and Korea’s “Master of Madness”—and considered the most influential filmmaker on the newest wave of Korean writers and directors—Kim is famous for exposing his characters’ emotions with a raw, almost phantasmagoric, intensity despite the constraints of his skimpy budgets. In 1997, the Pusan Film Festival honored him for his 40-plus-year contribution, and tonight, one of his most famous films, The Housemaid (1960), which was Korea’s highest-grossing film ever (can you say ménage à trois?), will be screening.
