Came the press release: “More than 100 of the top zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America! The local zoo or aquarium is the ideal place to connect with conservation in your community. Party for the Planet festivities will feature environmental education activities, amazing animal encounters, and fantastic family fun. To find a Party for the Planet near you, please visit www.aza.org/promotions/party.” Fabulous! I’m all in favor of celebrating the April 22 event in a pro-green way that won’t COST much green. But is it really wise to do so at places where unhappy animals are caged and gawked at, just waiting for a bouncing beach ball to distract them from their solemnity and start mauling people? Oh, well, I guess it’s better than having it in a steakhouse.
