What leads people to madness? For thousands of years, love—or rather the lack of it—has often been to blame. In its daring world premiere, Ariadne Unhinged, Gotham Chamber Opera explores a classic case of psychological breakdown with the tragic Greek myth of Ariadne, who, after helping her lover Theseus kill the odious Minotaur, is abandoned on the island of Naxos—and quickly proceeds to lose it. A multimedia party for the senses, Ariadne Unhinged features Gotham Chamber Opera mixing three musical works from various eras; celebrated artist Vera Lutter providing the visual stimulation; and Armitage Gone! Dance Company offering some entrancing contemporary ballet—all in an attempt to reflect one woman’s torrential mental and emotional states.
