8:00 pm Welcome to the 53rd annual Village Voice Obie awards at Webster Hall. Tonight’s ceremony is hosted by a couple of the finest actors around: Obie winners Elizabeth Marvel and Bill Camp. They also happen to be married to one another.
The Obies, as Voice theater critic Michael Feingold is explaining at this moment, have no fixed categories and no listed nominations (except for the Lifetime Achievement and Best New American Play awards). Artists receive Obies on their own merit and not in competition with others. The best part is at the end when we give out tons of cash ($13,000) to a few worthy theater groups.
Stew, of Passing Strange, looking dapper as always.
The crowd gets warmed up before the awards are given out.
