Another Gay Festival

New York’s LGBT film festival, NewFest, turns 20 this year, and proves that gay film is growing up—mostly. Last night’s opening featured the gay-star-studded teen comedy Tru Loved, director Stewart Wade’s cheeky story about a California high-school girl with two moms . . . and two dads. Curious? Catch tonight’s screening of Bi the Way, a pop-culture-informed investigative doc about bisexuality, with commentary by Dan Savage and the Voice’s Michael Musto. On Saturday, relive gay nightlife’s glory days with SqueezeBox!, the documentary by Zach Shaffer, Steve Saporito, and Sean Pierce on the dirty, draggy party at Don Hill’s that spawned John Cameron Mitchell’s character Hedwig. Also of note, if only for audacity alone: the continuance of the miserable Another Gay Movie franchise with Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!
