At first glance, this Celebrate Brooklyn event appeared to feature avant San Francisco weirdos Deerhoof playing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring—well within the band’s technical abilities. But no, not exactly: Openers Metropolis Ensemble, a New York–based new-music ensemble, are premiering The Rite: Remixed, a three-way collaboration between the young composers Ricardo Romaneiro, Ryan Francis, and Leo Leite. They’ll do it via orchestra and live sound manipulation, which could jibe nicely with the outdoor venue (although this being Park Slope, dudes should probably start figuring out now how they’re going to incorporate the sound of a thousand crying babies). Then comes Deerhoof: four players with bad posture capable of anything from marching-band formalism to free-form gusts of white noise, led by diminutive fireball Satomi Matsuzaki, and presumably premiering new material of their own tonight—their newest, the just-announced Offend Maggie, is out this October.
