The sound of Daptone Records is everywhere these days—unfortunately, that often means their affiliated band, the Dap-Kings, providing the soul engine
for Amy Winehouse. But lest the label itself be overlooked, it’s collecting
its artists for this all-afternoon Daptone revue. Headlining are Sharon
Jones and the Dap-Kings, a vibrant retro-soul outfit who are at times maybe
too committed to simulacra. Nevertheless, they’re fervent and accomplished, and sometimes excellent. Also performing are Daptone acts the Menahan Street Band (which includes some Dap-Kings), and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens. Both, in keeping with the Daptone ethic, have made their first release a 7″ single, though one suspects they will go on far longer this afternoon.
