The New York Daily News today editorializes in favor of the Willets Point development that (as we have reported) has enraged some local businesses. The News says the anti-development crusade spearheaded by Councilman Hiram Monserrate “threatens to restrict affordable-housing construction across the five boroughs,” and is outraged that Monserrate “wants the city to meet prices demanded by the property owners before the Council gives the project the go-ahead,” which would end up “forcing the city to pay more than its legal obligation.” The words “eminent domain” do not appear in the editorial.
Gotham Gazette looks at the anti-development position from an environmental standpoint: “In seeking to build New York City’s first ‘green’ neighborhood, the city could instead add to global warming and endanger that very same community.”
Now’s as good a time as any to link to Forgotten NY‘s excellent photo essay on “The Neighborhood the City Hates.”
