Today we’re giving James Oseland the Bawbawa Walters treatment, asking him our Four Questions not About Food. Oseland is the editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine and the author of the wonderful book Cradle of Flavor: Home Cooking from the Spice Islands of Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

What was the last book you read?

The Winona LaDuke Reader (I’m moderating a panel she’s on at Slow Food Nation in San Francisco next week).

What animal would you like to be reincarnated as, and why?

My cat Pete—from street cat to gourmet eater, he’s got a very comfy life.

Choose a superpower.

The power to see beyond seeing.

What did you dream about last night?

I was driving endlessly through a lush, imaginary rural Montana landscape past grand homes that once belonged to cattle barons. Strange.
