The Protest Before the Protest

by

East Village slacktivist John Penley and Jerry “the Peddler” Wade are threatening to take the city to federal court if they don’t get a sound permit for a planned September 5th protest. They are organizing a rally in front of the NYPD’s 9th Precinct that night to speak out against police brutality and local real estate developers’ attempts to force out rent-regulated tenants.

The duo already filed a request for an emergency hearing after getting the run-around about obtaining a sound permit application. They were able to fill out the application before a hearing was scheduled, and Penley now says that if the permit is not approved by 5 p.m. Wednesday, he will request another emergency hearing in federal court.

The protest will begin with a call for justice for Brad Will, the East Village activist who was killed during a 2006 demonstration in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The protest promises a couple of live bands and activist speakers including musician Nana Soul, political comedian Randy Credico, known for his work fighting the Rockefeller drug laws, and Father Frank Morales, a pastor at St. Marks Church-in-the-Bowery.

It all kicks off at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5th.
