You’d certainly be forgiven for wondering why on earth you should attend the Fender 50th Anniversary Jazzmaster Concert, a birthday party for a guitar, which sounds about as much fun as a trade show populated by geeks wearing iPod earbuds rather than Bluetooth headsets. Tonight’s impressive guest list, though, promises entertainment of a slightly higher order: To pay tribute to its hipster-beloved Jazzmaster—the high-end successor to both the Telecaster and the Stratocaster—Fender has gathered together a post-punk all-star team featuring Tom Verlaine (of Television), Nels Cline (of Wilco), Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth), and J Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr.), none of whom lends his name to corporate concerns lightly. I typically regard the prospect of lengthy solos with suspicion, but this might prove to be an exception. With Norton Wisdom and Edison Glass.
