SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN

by

Because they’re good-looking guys all too willing to talk up their predilection for whiskey and women, Tennessee’s Kings of Leon don’t really get the credit they deserve as musicians. (Poor babies!) Yet this band of brothers (and a cousin) actually has some appealingly outré ideas about how to put together a garage-rock song: On last year’s Because of the Times and the brand-new Only By the Night (due out today), the Kings mostly eschew immediately catchy choruses and fuzzy guitar chords for serpentine melodies and prickly lead lines that recall the Pixies far more than they do the Ramones.
