Antony Hegarty–like Bjork, Sufjan, Nico Muhly, and Wendy Carlos–has a fiercely committed vision. Thirteen years of desperate, creative NYC living prepared the androgynous British-born, U.S.-raised musician to snatch the 2005 Mercury Prize from the likes of Coldplay and M.I.A. with the I Am a Bird Now album. Since then, this fem hollyhock of a Jungian male has toured the world and been making memorable guest appearances with his art-scene peers. Last spring at the Apollo he duetted with Bjork on “The Dull Flame of Desire.” His rendering of Lou Reed’s “Candy Says,” in Julian Schnabel’s concert documentary Berlin, stunned both enraptured viewers and Lou Reed himself. Performing songs from his brand-new EP Another World and previewing the forthcoming album The Crying Light, Antony and the Johnsons (including pianist Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett) will be accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra conducted by Brit nouveau maestro James Holmes. Lighting wizard Paul Normandale (Coldplay, Bjork) paints the visual spectacle.
