Leave it to the Times to take the “Hey, we have Joe the Plumbers too” angle used as GOP propaganda by the Post and turn it into a discussion of trends. Gil Perez of Staten Island disputes the “chubby guy with the cigar” stereotype. “Plumbers today are businessmen,” says Perez. “Some are metrosexuals.” Another attended a “black-tie affair” at the New York Public Library, where he believes he “charmed” a woman by describing his job as “the first thing you think about when you wake up.” Though the plumber’s union has actually endorsed Obama, one of its officials says they’re “not unhappy with the situation,” as it raises awareness of the profession.
