The Afro-Punk gang has returned to bum-rush CMJ this year with a hot host of folks, including Hollywood Holt, Ebony Bones, and Dallas Austin (promoting his new The Dallas Austin Experience). This generous three-fer should ensure a brief respite of belonging and togetherness for those of us whose lot has always been designated lone Negro at the show. Generating the most excitement will be indie power trio the Noisettes, fronted by dynamite UK Blak punkette Shingai Shoniwa. Watch her deploy some of her Zim native tongue, pay homage to Sister Rosetta Tharpe (in song) and Nona Hendryx (visually), kick Chuck Berry–worthy rave-ups with bandmates Dan Smith and Jamie Morrison, and just plain leap off things in the dizzy revelry. With the Dallas Austin Experience, U-God, and DJ Ruckus.
