Angered by Court Ruling on Hybrid Plan, Mayor Makes Cabbies Pay (Updated)

Having tried the stick on gas-guzzling taxis, Mayor Bloomberg goes now for the carrot — that is, someone else’s carrot. In place of his failed forced hybridization program, which got tossed by a judge last month, Bloomberg will green the city’s cab fleet by offering “financial incentives for taxi fleet owners to purchase fuel efficient vehicles,” says WNBC. Newsday explains: fleet owners will be allowed to charge drivers more to use their cabs if they’re hybrids. So the drivers’ carrots will pay for our environmentalism! Next, Bloomberg will have Wall Street messengers cover the expenses of bankrupt financial firms. (Update: TLC clarifies. See here.)
