The director’s most complex work to date, this beguiling film links a pair of love stories, two illicit romances, one gay, one straight, one set in the present, the other during World War II and kept alive in a faltering memory. It’s particularly notable for the last performance of the great Massimo Girotti (the best-looking leading man in the golden age of Italian cinema, who starred in classics of Pasolini, Rossellini and Antonioni) as an elderly survivor of the Nazi death camps. Girotti never got to see his superb performance—he died before the film was released.
