With the economic woes staying put—giving our wallets a case of anorexia—who’s in the mood to buy gifts? Skip that pricy outdoor mall (a/k/a Soho) and instead visit the local hardworking artists and other crafty folk who are selling affordable treasures at two big shopping events today. Downtown at the Knitting Factory, the online indie marketplace Etsy is hosting Holiday Handmade Cavalcade, with more than 30 vendors including Blue Stitch Books, Dirty Clean (natural/vegan bath-and-body goods), and May Luk Ceramics. In Harlem, Harriet’s Alter Ego presents its popular annual party, Shop and Mingle, featuring clothing and other goodies by fashion designers and—to put you in the shopping mood—an open bar (courtesy of the Harlem Brewing Company), music, desserts, and complimentary makeovers. The only tough decision you’ll have to make is how many gifts to keep for yourself.
