As Hildy—the brassy taxi driver in last month’s Encores! staging of On the Town—Leslie Kritzer was good and all, but she was no Lea DeLaria. But then, who is? The vocal and comedic powerhouse blew audiences away in the 1999 revival of that Comden and Green classic, and, almost a decade later, she still deserves props. DeLaria’s been in the biz 25 years though, and she’s gone from notoriety in the raunchy lesbian comedy world to Broadway star to a recognized jazz songstress, who will likely inject a bit of all her strengths into tonight’s Christmas show. Backed by the Dirty Martini Band, DeLaria will perform tunes from her latest album, The Live Smoke Sessions.
