Staten Islander Escaped Mumbai Massacre

As preparations are made to bury Mumbai terror victims Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg in Israel, the Staten Island Advance tells us about a New Yorker who escaped the attacks: tour director Rachel Cirincione of St. George, who was in Mumbai for training. When the violence erupted, Cirincione found exit routes from her Taj Mahal hotel room blocked by flames and gunfire, so she waited for help; when the room filled with smoke and she couldn’t open the window, she used a corkscrew to drill a hole in the window frame so she could breathe. Cirincione was finally able to signal firefighters with a headlamp early Thursday morning. She’s at home now, recuperating. “I’m good at emergencies,” said Cirincione, “and that’s why I’m attracted to the more difficult destinations.”
