The New York Times Book Review posts their 10 best books of the year. The fiction: Dangerous Laughter, by Steven Millhauser, A Mercy, by Toni Morrison, Netherland, by Joseph O’Neill, 2666, by Roberto Bolaño, and Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri. The elisions here are weird–how does Lush Life get beat out by two short-story collections? This also seems like as good a place as any as well to register my baffled disappointment that Ed Park’s Personal Days got left off the Times‘s bigger list, “100 Notable Books of 2008.” Really? Atmospheric Disturbances was better somehow?
