Espada Explains $60K in Unpaid Fines with Godfather Quote

The Times tells readers — as we did last month — that Pedro Espada, the once and future state senator who settled with the Democratic Leadership this week and will play majority leader to Malcolm Smith’s president pro tempore, has been racking up fines with the Campaign Finance Board since 2001 and now owes over $60,000. He is appealing these fines in court. (The Daily News noted in November that Espada missed five campaign finance filing deadlines this year.)

Espada tells the Times “That’s part of the business we’re in, as they say in the ‘Godfather’ movies.”
