As you know, Conde Nast responded to the economic crackdown on luxury by reducing Men’s Vogue to two issues a year, and for the first time in my adult life, I actually felt sorry for the menfolk. What I’m hearing is that editor Jay Fielden had a year left on his contract and they offered to pay him off that amount to just go home, but they also gave him the option of editing ’09’s two special Men’s Vogue issues for the very same money. And he chose the latter! Is the man fashionable insane, stylishly out of his gourd? Not at all. Any sensible creative person would grab at the chance to stay in the game and keep doing stimulating work even if he could sit home in his underpants and cash the very same check without lifting a manicured finger.
The sad thing, though, is that, with the magazine dwindling, no longer will there be a steady home base for males who like to hunt and wear designer ascots at the same time. Tragique!
