Hollywood actress Ann Savage passed away on Christmas Day after a series of strokes. She had a long, active career, but she is primarily known for playing Vera in Edgar Ulmer’s 1945 Detour. The movie may be the most hopeless and deterministic noir picture ever, and Savage plays Vera as a feral cat, all appetite and suspicion, who treats the hapless hero’s weakness and sentimentality as loathsome infections she is not eager to contract. Her performance is either monotonous or relentlessly unsentimental, depending on how you like this sort of thing. Also, last year Savage appeared in Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg as the auteur’s mother.
