NEW YORK CITY ARCHIVES

SURE SHOT

by

When it comes to observing New York City life, actor and stand-up comedian Todd Barry—who’s appeared on Flight of the Conchords as an overzealous bongo player and, most recently, in The Wrestler—has a superb eye for finding the absurd in all of the everyday hassles. On his newest comedy album, From Heaven, he takes aim at everything from parking tickets to leaky ceilings to the ridiculousness of Manhattan apartment hunting (when a broker tells Barry that the apartment he’s seeing is across the street from Sarah Jessica Parker, Barry deadpans, “Great, for all my Sarah Jessica Parker needs”). Not even kids are safe from Barry’s sarcasm: On seeing a baby in a Dead Kennedys T-shirt, he says, “I just wanted to walk up to the father and go, ‘Hey, you know what? Your kid ain’t that cool.'” Amen.
