The day of the r&b band is gone. It’s for the worse, certainly, although that can’t provide veterans Mint Condition much comfort. The Minneapolis-St. Paul outfit has been marginal since their last mid-90s chart riser, “What Kind of Man Would I Be,” but they haven’t faltered creatively, releasing four grown folks albums since. That they comfortably trouble love and relationship with vulnerability separates the quintet from their glib and base colleagues – but lead Stokley’s vein-popping vocals, distressed and incisive when traveling his bandmates’ expert musicianship, are the real thing.
