Death by Audio

Hey Willpower’s live show is bound to cause nightmares. It isn’t the seafoam-green jumpsuit that Imperial Teen‘s Will Schwartz wears onstage–or the eyeful of man cameltoe assaulting the rest of us of when he dances in it. Rather, it is the creature stationed behind a MacBook, in the back–a furry bunny with droopy breasts and a big bare-skinned belly. But that’s the way this San Francisco queer-pop dance band rolls, all electro-sass jams and uncomfortable sextapositions, Har Mar without the jokes, Prince without unimpeachable hits. A line like “I feel you melting in my hands” from “Magic Window”–a single off Hey Willpower’s PDA, out in North America on the 20th–is both meant to be literal and cheeky, as is the beckoning, “Come to the party in my pants.” I was there on Saturday, and yes, the party in Schwartz’s pants was too. So was Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig (photo below). Awkward.
