Last year, French dream-pop artist M83 found songs hiding in swelling synths and thwacking drum machines. The one-man-band (aka Anthony Gonzalez) even found space for some guitars on Saturdays=Youth, his oft-otherworldly fifth full-length. Although Vangelis-quoting symphonic electronic work is still his creative linchpin, Gonzalez now has such a knack for catchy, 4AD-worthy vocal ideas (“Skin of the Night”) and deep, shoegazy layers (“Kim & Jessie”) that he seems to have totally redefined himself.
