Catsimatidis Contributes $1 Million to Catsimatidis for Mayor

Supermarket tycoon and onetime Voice cover subject John Catsimatidis has shifted a million dollars from his petty cash to his mayoral campaign just to “show everybody I am alive” — that is, that he still might fully engage his long-threatened run for the Republican nomination, which is assumed to be Bloomberg’s for the seizing. Catsimatidis’ main non-Bloomberg rival for the nomination, Bruce Blakeman, dropped out when Bloomberg overthrew term limits to run again, so the Gristedes owner has the sacrificial lamb role all to himself. But it’s seldom a bad idea to be a patient suitor; Bloomberg may perish, or be distracted by an offer to lead a small Central American country, and then Catsimatidis will be in, because New Yorkers apparently can’t resist billionaires.
