We recently asked Michael Dorf, founder of the new City Winery (155 Varick Street) and also founder of the Knitting Factory back in the day, for his take on wine pairing. His answer surprised us, but given his background, well it probably shouldn’t have.
Dorf suggests pairing wine with music. “When pairing wine with music, one needs to consider the history of the group or artist, where they came from, their background, influences, what is going on in their current song writing psyche,” he says, “I take these elements very seriously when pairing music with wine.” For example, Dorf is pairing tonight’s Suzanne Vega show at City Winery with an “elegant sparkly Riesling from the Alsace, of course.”
These days, we might pair based on the economics of it all: perhaps an illegally downloaded new album with a bottle in the $10-12 range. But what about you, dear readers? What (humorous) wine+music pairings would you suggest?
E-mail your pairings to firstname.lastname@example.org. The winning pairing will get a free Vinofile Membership at City Winery (a $50 value!) and a blind wine tasting.
