Even a half a century later, Douglas Sirk, a celebrated German-émigré filmmaker of sublime Hollywood melodramas in the 1950s, retains an influence on current directors from Todd Haynes to Pedro Almodóvar. However, his three most popular works—Magnificent Obsession, Interlude, and Imitation of Life—were all remakes of films made in the 1930s by studio craftsman John M. Stahl, which, some critics claim, are far superior to the Sirk adaptations.
