Figuring out what to play and how to play it has never been a problem for John Scofield; the veteran jazz guitarist is an omnivore when it comes to contextual switcheroos, moving from small combo swing to jam-a-delic extrapolations to gritty r&b romps. His current band is a trio deal aided and abetted by a brass ‘n’ reeds micro orchestra called the Sco Horns. Versatility is their signature: Whether easing up on a guitar passage with a moody aura à la Gil Evans, or throwing Amen Corner shouts back at the band during a feverish peak, their embellishments and energy widen the trio’s pallet. That means the piercing stuff is as riveting as the poignant stuff; those contextual switcheroos now take place in a single program. No wonder they call their disc This Meets That.
