Colorado Springs is not particularly beautiful. When I worked at a dude ranch and it was the nearest city, my friends and I would drive two and a half hours on Jesus-billboard-lined highways just to get to Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, or McDonalds. But when you live with horses, Colorado Springs is the place to be. It’s also the home of the scandal-laden New Life mega-church, formerly directed by the formerly homosexual pastor, Ted Haggard. This Beautiful City, a musical by the Obie-winning Civilians, portrays life in crazy Christian central at the time that Haggard’s news broke, in a Laramie Project–esque theatrical documentary.
