This song is called “New York’s Giving Me The Creeps,” and it’s great.
Stereogum rounds up a bunch of photos and video from Thorns of Life’s West Coast swing this past weekend. I would be the first to admit that there’s something somewhat awful going on here–this is a band that, despite its best efforts to play secret shows and dodge MySpace and bars with age limits, Bowery Presents, etc., is basically being forced to become that band through relentless speculation on Brandon’s part, my part, and so on. One imagines they experience this stuff as a real intrusion: like someone crashing your party and posting pictures, video, and rampant speculation about the evening within minutes of it ending. No one gets to see this band cold, with no expectations–no one gets to be surprised. My guess is there will never be a Thorns of Life record for precisely these reasons: at a certain point, for guys who’ve already had successful bands and reaped whatever rewards rabid fans may yield, an inability to do a band the way you want to do a band makes the band not worth doing. That said, I hope I’m wrong–these songs are great.
