He convinces whether rampaging or romanticizing and, during the pianist’s most memorable solos, there’s a bit of both taking place. His work with Branford Marsalis’s mighty foursome has put a bit of a shadow on his own conceptions, but the string of discs that he’s released this millennium have been engaging and inventive. Corea and Jarrett may still take up some space in his world but, more and more, the DNA of Calderazzo’s aesthetic is being revealed. There’ll be plenty of chemistry between him and drummer Jeff Watts in tonight’s trio.
